Stage 6 Reflection

Retrieved October 22nd From: SandraRief.com
As teachers and past students ourselves, I think we all know one of the biggest challenges teachers face in math is the dreaded "I'm never going to use/need this". This is one of the most common struggles, I personally believe, that we face as teachers. Students become disengaged when they can't see or understand how they might use something in life.

This week, we had the opportunity to look into some applications of mathematics in real life. I believe that it is our responsibility to instil a growth mindset in our students, and to help them understand that they may not need to know a specific formula at any particular point in their life, however that math intuition is extremely important.

If you can take a minute to watch this video, it is one of the many I watched this week regarding mathematical applications in real life.  I don't personally know much about the Fibonacci Spiral, however by watching this video, I was able to expand my knowledge. I also had the opportunity to watch a video about Dolphins using math to communicate amongst themselves, how neat, right?

I believe by showing students that math is used in many different ways, it will help them go beyond their comfort zone, especially if we can relate it to animals, because it proves that mathematics are used in all aspects of living.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Thanks Kursten, for sharing your thoughts with us! I agree that all teachers should be showing students that math is used, and can be used in many different ways. Teachers should also be telling students that they can easily see math emerging from the real world everywhere they go. As we’ve learned, the key to making math more meaningful for all students is to make clear connections between math and everyday life for students to see and study from. In your blog post you mentioned how students often become disengaged when they can't see or understand how they might use something in life. If we are using examples like the ones mentioned in this video, in the math classroom, then we can help students go beyond their comfort zone, gain an appreciation for learning mathematics and deepen their understanding.

  2. Hello Kursten, thanks for your input and thoughts of how relevant math can be to anyone or any animal! You made some great points on how if we just take the time to show students how worldly math is, and can be, then we will be able to assist them in realizing the importance of math within their lives and their future. I enjoy how you incorporated our video from this week as I feel that it can make relating to math for students much easier in a way that will ease them into interest in math!
    Great post!

  3. Hi Kursten,

I think it is imperative that we as educators are able to provide our students with as many real world connections as possible. It is truly eye opening how math plays a vital role in life on this planet. When we learn to understand how patterns can be recognized all around us, math is given a deeper meaning. The video is great and I think it will be valuable to use in a classroom of our own.
